THE DOUBLE REGULATOR
This double regulator is equipped with
two identical and independent pre-
cision movements, each with a seconds
pendulum. Shortly after setting both
pendulums in motion, it may be noticed
that they will settle into a mode where
they swing in opposition. In other words,
with a phase shift of 180°.
This mode of operation is very stable.
Although there is no connection between
the two clocks they remain mysteriously
synchronized.
Fine regulation is performed by adding
or removing weights on the pendulum
trays. The phase shift of 180° persists
at all times.
The phenomenon of the synchronized
movement of two pendulums has
fascinated horologists since Christian
Huygens (1629–1695).
